A church for the people. That was the idea behind Nathanaels Kirke. Nathanaels Kirke stands proudly in the heart of Amagerbro, a testament to the community’s spirit. Nathanaels Kirke emerged from the rapid growth of this working-class neighborhood in the late 19th century. The area, bursting at the seams with new residents, desperately needed a spiritual center. The Association for the Construction of Small Churches in Copenhagen, founded by three forward-thinking women, stepped in. They spearheaded the project, laying the foundation stone in June 1897. Just nine months later, on March 19, 1899, Nathanaels Kirke opened its doors. The architect, Thorvald Jørgensen, envisioned a Neo-Romanesque masterpiece. He chose red brick, a humble yet durable material. He set it upon a sturdy plinth of Bornholm granite. Look closely at the south gable’s tympanum. A vibrant glass mosaic, added in 1986 by artist William Fridericia, depicts Nathanael’s first encounter with Jesus. It’s a powerful scene, full of symbolism. Notice the nine tall, rounded windows lining the sides. They are grouped in threes, the central window in each set reaching higher, as if striving towards heaven. The bell tower, nestled at the southwest corner, completes the picture. Inside Nathanaels Kirke, a barrel-vaulted ceiling adorned with molded ornamentation draws the eye upwards. Galleries on the east and west sides offer additional space. The church became a hub for the community. A place of solace, celebration, and connection. It served as a reminder of shared values and aspirations in a rapidly changing world. Nathanaels Kirke, born from the needs of a burgeoning community, continues to stand as a beacon of faith and resilience.
