Clutching your spyglass, imagine the Shanghai Fire Tower in the Ming Dynasty. It was a beacon of safety, one of 112 watchtowers guarding against the ever-present threat of fire. These Wanghuo Towers, as they were known, dotted the Beijing landscape, a silent promise of protection. The Fire Tower, a vital part of the city’s defense system, kept a watchful eye, day and night, ready to raise the alarm. The Ming Dynasty understood the devastating power of fire. They didn’t just rely on these watchtowers. They implemented firebreaks every seven rooms, a testament to their sophisticated understanding of fire prevention. Now, fast forward to the modern era. In 1866, Shanghai established its first modern fire brigade. This force, a mix of 60 foreign and 40 Chinese members, marked a significant step forward in firefighting technology. While primarily serving the foreign concessions, it laid the groundwork for future advancements. Later, in 1902, Yuan Shikai established China’s first truly modern fire brigade within the Beiyang New Army. This brigade, equipped with modern firefighting equipment like fire trucks, signified a new era of fire safety. Today, the Fire Tower might not be a watchtower in the traditional sense, but its legacy lives on. The very name reminds us of the constant battle against fire and the evolution of fire safety in Shanghai.
