In 1959, in the Trindade neighborhood of São Gonçalo, Colégio Dom Hélder Câmara opened its doors. This marked the first stone laid in the foundation of what would become UNIVERSO. The transformation wasn’t overnight. It took years of growth and evolution. In 1976, the first higher education courses were offered at the Faculdade de Educação, Ciências e Letras de São Gonçalo. The institution continued to expand, and by 1985, it had ten courses and had become the Faculdades Integradas de São Gonçalo. The dream of a full-fledged university was realized in 1993. On September 9th, Universidade Salgado de Oliveira – or UNIVERSO as it’s affectionately known – officially came into being. At that time, UNIVERSO had two campuses, one in São Gonçalo and this very campus in Niterói. The university even offered post-graduate courses across various locations in Brazil.
