Edmundo Icaza Munguia was born in León on October 1 1900. He was the son of Francisco Icaza and Mercedes Munguía. His mother passed away when he was 37. From the age of 15 he grew up under the care of his maternal grandparents. They lived in the El Calvario neighborhood.
Between 1913 and 1916 Edmundo studied at the Colegio Beato Salomón. Later he entered the Instituto Nacional de Occidente. He left school due to his mother’s death. He needed to work to survive.
First Edmundo taught primary school children at home. Then he became warehouse manager at the Ingenio San Antonio in Chichigalpa. Later in Managua he worked as a leather worker. In 1928 he was appointed to the rural area of Posoltega. This was during the administration of José María Moncada.
Edmundo later directed a group of workers during paving work. Then he became the personal secretary of Captain Almanza. This was at the El Limón mine. His nephew Noel Icaza entrusted him with managing his businesses in León. In the 1970s the Gurdián family appointed him director of the Tenería Gurdián.
Edmundo married María Elsa Mendoza. They had Mercedes who died on May 13 1941. They also had Violeta who died as an infant. His son Edmundo Icaza Mendoza was a journalist poet and fighter. After his first wife’s death he married Dora Jiménez Pérez. They had seven children Gloria Venus Ricardo León Leónidas Duque Félix Franco Mario José Vida Mercedes and Juan René Icaza Jiménez.
Edmundo Icaza Munguía died on February 3 2002. He was recognized for his literary work in León La Paz Centro Chinandega and Jinotepe. The public library of El Pellizco Chichigalpa is named after him. In May 1981 the mayor Luis Felipe Pérez Caldera named him Favorite Son of the City of León.
Despite personal hardships Edmundo developed his poetic talent. His writings became known in 1940. They were published in “El Cronista” and “La Noticia”. In his later years he dedicated himself to literature. He published several books including “Montaña de trinos” and “Tirándole auroras al mundo”.
His first book “Montaña de trinos” contains poems and prose poetry. His poetry often explored love and celebrated figures like Cristóbal Colón. His writing style combined modernism and vanguardism.
