Did the ground beneath our feet ever whisper tales of fiery kilns and bustling industry? Here at Cranham Brickfields, nature has reclaimed what was once a hive of human activity. Cranham Brickfields today is a vibrant 8.5-hectare Local Nature Reserve. It boasts wildflower meadows, a tranquil pond, and even a children’s playground. But its past life tells a different story. Imagine this space at the turn of the 20th century, a landscape dominated by the Cranham Brick and Tile Company. Up to seventy local men toiled here, excavating the clay that would become the very building blocks of the surrounding area. Kilns roared to life, baking the bricks to a fiery red. A railway line snaked through the site, carrying raw materials in and finished bricks out. Some of those very bricks, made right here at Cranham Brickfields, can still be seen in Upminster’s garden walls, silent testaments to the site’s industrial heritage. The brick-earth eventually ran out, bringing an end to brickmaking in 1920. The buildings were demolished, and nature began its slow creep back in. During World War II, necessity dictated another transformation. Cranham Brickfields became a vital part of the “Dig for Victory” campaign, a testament to the resilience of the community in times of hardship. The fields that once yielded clay now sprouted vegetables and fruits, feeding a nation at war. Today, as you stroll through the peaceful meadows and woodlands of Cranham Brickfields, remnants of its past still linger. The ground beneath your feet, once scarred by industry, now nurtures a surprising array of wildlife. Bullfinches flit among the trees, great crested newts glide through the pond, and the rare dyer’s greenweed adds a splash of vibrant color. Cranham Brickfields is a testament to the ever-changing relationship between humans and nature. It’s a place where the echoes of industry intertwine with the songs of birds, creating a unique and captivating story.
