The story of Barbabas Missionary Baptist Church begins in June 1990. The late Rev. W.G. Jones Sr. founded the church. It started with only five dedicated members. These were Mrs. Vera Jones, Courtney Jones, W.G. Jones Jr., Teresa Jones and W.G. Jones III. Early services took place in Pastor Jones’ garage on Hedgdon Street.
Rev. Jones envisioned growth and community impact. He especially wanted to educate the youth. From 1990 to 1993, Barbabas Missionary Baptist Church expanded. The church grew both spiritually and in numbers. The Barnabas Workforce built a new sanctuary at 4431 Hedgdon. They received support from Greater New Hope Baptist Church. John G. Mackey was pastor there. The building was finished in May 1993.
In 1993, Pastor Jones became ill. He asked Pastor C.H. Gerald for assistance. Gregory D. Ware arrived in August 1993. He continued the services. Rev. Jones passed away on February 11, 1994.
On April 13, 1994, the church members chose Gregory D. Ware as their pastor. Under Pastor Ware’s leadership, Barbabas Missionary Baptist Church thrived. The church started a community picnic. It takes place every September at Fruitdale Recreation Center. The church also purchased a van. They acquired almost eight acres of land and another lot across the street. Despite fluctuating attendance, the church paid off all these assets. For 15 years, the church grew at 4431 Hedgdon. They served the community with love.
In 2007, Barbabas Baptist Church broke ground for a new sanctuary. Courtney Jones Taylor designed the building. Triple J Design and Construction completed the construction. Rev. W.G. Jones Sr. had started this company. His children W.G. Jones Jr., Teresa Jones and Richard Jones operated it. Before moving to the new building, the church experienced immense support. This showed that the Lord values dedication over numbers.
On June 8, 2008, Pastor Ware led the members. They marched from 4431 Hedgdon to 3210 Linfield. They officially opened the new sanctuary. Barbabas Missionary Baptist Church is known as the church of Encouragement. It welcomes everyone to Sunday services and Sunday School. They focus on connections and sharing beliefs through sermons and Bible study. It creates a supportive community. The church emphasizes spiritual growth and fellowship. It invites people to engage in events. Wednesday night Bible Study is one such event. The church wants to spread positivity and faith. It strives to impact its members and the community.
