Tucked away in the 19th arrondissement, Jardin Hérold whispers stories of transformation. This triangular park, a mere 2,800 square meters, holds a history far grander than its size suggests. Jardin Hérold wasn’t always a green haven. It once housed the sprawling Hérold Hospital, named after Ferdinand Hérold, a prefect of the Seine. The hospital occupied the entire block, bordered by Rue David-d’Angers, Boulevard Sérurier, and Rue du Général-Brunet. In 1988, the hospital moved to its new location, becoming the Robert-Debré Hospital. The old site became a prime location for development. A new street, Rue Francis-Ponge, sliced the land in two. The southern portion became home to Lycée Diderot in 1995. The northern part saw construction in the late 2000s, buildings rising along the streets. Only the heart of the block remained untouched, deemed unsuitable for construction. This seemingly forgotten space became Jardin Hérold in 2012. It’s a testament to urban renewal, transforming a former hospital site into a vibrant green space for the community. Jardin Hérold is accessible by metro line 7bis at the Danube station. You can also reach it from the tramway line 3b at the Hôpital Robert-Debré and Butte du Chapeau Rouge stations. Within Jardin Hérold, you’ll find several community gardens. The Debrouille Compagnie association manages the shared garden. Espaces association oversees the solidarity garden. The intergenerational garden is cared for by the EHPAD Hérold and the Francis Ponge daycare center. The gardens foster connection, inviting people of all ages and backgrounds to come together. Jardin Hérold is more than just a park. It’s a living embodiment of community spirit, a testament to the power of transformation, and a hidden gem in the heart of Paris.
