On a crisp autumn day, October 29, 1894, the cornerstone was laid for what would become the Parroqui Josefina del Espiritu Santo. This marked the beginning of a spiritual journey for the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood. Located on Calle Sabino 188 in Mexico City, Parroqui Josefina del Espiritu Santo has witnessed over a century of history unfold. The chapel began to rise in 1898. A few years later, on April 26, 1907, the shrine of Our Lady of Consuelo was completed. A painting of the Holy Spirit, created by the Italian artist Aristide Diez in Rome, was blessed on the same day. Parroqui Josefina del Espiritu Santo officially became a parish on January 4, 1907, under the continued guidance of the Josephite Missionaries. The architecture of Parroqui Josefina del Espiritu Santo is unique. Its blend of styles gives it an “anastyle” classification. The basilica-style layout features two levels. A choir loft occupies the upper level, flanked by large windows that fill the space with light. The gilded coffered ceiling rests upon octagonal marble columns. The apse houses a painting of the Holy Trinity surrounded by angels. Paintings depicting scenes from the crucifixion adorn the sides. The main altar holds the image of Our Lady of Consuelo, with Saint Joseph to the right. Below the presbytery, the right altar houses the Tabernacle, while Our Lady of Guadalupe graces the left. Parroqui Josefina del Espiritu Santo is one of the few churches with a communion rail and numerous statues on pedestals along the sides. The original Capilla del Espiritu Santo sits adjacent to the parish. In 1959, Pope John XXIII presided over the Pontifical Coronation of Our Lady of Consuelo. Processions honoring the Virgin take place on the Friday of Sorrows, Good Friday during the Procession of Silence, and on her feast day, September 15. These processions wind through the streets of Santa María la Ribera, filled with songs, praises, and moments of quiet reflection. A statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, blessed by Pope John Paul II during one of his visits to Mexico, is known as the “Pilgrim Virgin.” It travels to the homes of parishioners, carrying blessings and faith. The two churches and three schools established by the Josephite Missionaries in the neighborhood have played a crucial role in nurturing the education and faith of children and young people.
