Beneath the towering structures of the Shanghai Shidongkou 1 & 2 Power Plants lies a story of innovation. It is a story of energy and of transformation. These plants represent Shanghai’s industrial might. They also highlight the city’s commitment to progress.
Shanghai Shidongkou 1 & 2 Power Plants are located in Shenqiao Town. They stand as a testament to China’s evolving power generation. The plants began with Shidongkou-1. It was commissioned between 1988 and 1990 with four 325 MW units. Shidongkou-2 followed. It added two 600 MW and two 660 MW units between 1992 and 2009.
These plants were initially a joint effort. The central and local governments of China collaborated. Later, China Huaneng Group acquired all shares. The Shanghai Shidongkou Power Generation Base reached a total capacity of 3.45 million kilowatts.
The Shanghai Shidongkou First Power Plant started in 1985. It was completed in 1990. It was a key project of the seventh five-year plan. It installed four 300000 kilowatt domestic generating units. However, its technical and economic benefits remained average.
The Second Power Plant began in 1988. China Huaneng Group and Shenneng Co. invested equally. In 1999, Huaneng bought 49.34% of Shenneng’s assets. This was in Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou No.2 Power Plant. The sum amounted to 3.5 billion yuan. This power plant used supercritical units. It was equipped with two 600000 kilowatt units. The main equipment came from Switzerland and the United States.
Notably, part of Shidongkou-2 included carbon capture technology. This captured 0.1 million tonnes of CO2 a year. That’s about 4% of a single unit’s output.
Change continued with the replacement of Shidongkou-1 Units 1-4. Two new 650 MW units were planned. Construction started in December 2020. By May 2023, Unit 6 was operating. This completed an equal-capacity replacement demonstration project. Two 325 MW units were shut down.
