Across the shimmering Bosphorus, Salacak beckons. Salacak is more than just a picturesque Istanbul neighborhood. It holds a history as layered and complex as the city itself. Salacak’s name whispers tales of both life and death. The commonly accepted meaning, “the bench on which the corpse is washed,” paints a somber picture. Legend says that Sultan Mehmet II chose this sloping shoreline for the ritual cleansing of fallen soldiers. However, another, gentler interpretation suggests “sala,” meaning “village” in an unknown language, combined with the Turkish suffix “-cık,” meaning small. This paints Salacak as a quaint waterside village, a much more inviting image. Dominating the Salacak coastline is the Maiden’s Tower, Kız Kulesi, a structure shrouded in myth and legend. One tragic tale tells of Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, and her lover Leander. Leander swam across the Bosphorus every night, guided by Hero’s lantern, to be with her. One stormy night, the lantern was extinguished, and Leander drowned. Hero, heartbroken, threw herself into the sea to join him. Another legend links the tower to Battal Gazi, a mythical Muslim warrior. He supposedly raided the tower, stole the Byzantine Emperor’s daughter, and set the Emperor’s ships ablaze. This daring act gave rise to a Turkish proverb about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. Beyond romance and daring feats, Salacak has a history of artistry. In the 17th century, Salacak produced a delicate fabric called “çatma,” also known as the “Çatma of Üsküdar.” This fabric, woven from silk or linen and embroidered with gold and silver threads, depicted recurring patterns of fruits and plants. These endless designs were believed to offer a glimpse into the infinite. Çatma gained international acclaim, especially the Turkish Rococo design, and was used for clothing and furniture. Even the world of art has been touched by the beauty of Salacak. Turkish artist Hasan Vecih Bereketoğlu, captivated by the interplay of light and landscape, often painted impressions of Salacak, capturing its unique charm on canvas. So, as you stand here, gazing at Salacak, remember that you are not just looking at a beautiful view. You are looking at a tapestry woven from threads of love, loss, legend, artistry, and the everyday lives of the people who call this special place home.
