From rubble to rhythm, Max Roach Park emerged. This Brixton green space isn’t just a park. It’s a tribute to a jazz legend. Max Roach Park stands as a testament to community spirit and musical heritage.

Max Roach Park’s story begins in the 1970s. The site was once occupied by terraced houses, slated for demolition under the Brixton Development Plan. Squatters protested the plan, occupying the properties until they were rehoused in 1978. The demolition proceeded, and the park, initially called Angell Park, began to take shape.

The park’s transformation didn’t end there. In 1986, Lambeth Councillor Sharon Atkin championed the renaming of several sites to honor figures of African descent. This park was renamed after the iconic American jazz drummer Max Roach. Roach himself visited the park during a GLC-sponsored trip to London. He attended the official opening alongside Councillor Atkin and drummer Ken Gordon. This visit solidified Max Roach Park’s connection to music and cultural exchange.

Today, Max Roach Park offers a vibrant space for the community. It boasts a children’s playground, a One O’Clock Club, and an adventure playground, although these amenities have faced funding challenges. A nature trail extends to Rush Common, providing a tranquil escape within the urban landscape. The park also holds a special piece of history. The “First Child” sculpture stands as a poignant memorial to the children killed in the 1976 Soweto uprising. Max Roach Park is more than just a green space. It’s a place where history, music, and community intertwine, creating a unique and meaningful destination.
