Perhaps the name Megyer rings a bell. It is a historical Hungarian term. It carries different meanings in the Hungarian language. Many of these meanings connect with geographical regions in Hungary.

Megyer also refers to an area in the northern part of Budapest. It is part of the 4th District of Budapest also known as Újpest. Újpest means New Pest. This area got its name because it formed on the border of the city of Pest in 1838.

Imagine Megyer as a village. It existed as such for six decades. It then became a town in 1907. Finally, in 1950, it unified with Budapest. This unification formed Greater Budapest. Since then, Megyer has been a part of Újpest. It contributes to the district’s diverse character.

Újpest is the largest part of the 4th District. Besides Megyer, Újpest includes other areas. Káposztásmegyer is one of them. Istvántelek is another. Székesdűlő also belongs to Újpest. Even the northern tip of Népsziget island is included.

Megyer, though a smaller part of a larger district, has its own identity. You can find the Megyer Parish here. The Megyeri Cemetery is also located here. It opened in 1921. Before that the territory was part of Fóti Rd’s estate. Count Laszlo Karolyi owned it. Today, it is the fourth largest cemetery in Budapest by size.

The Megyeri Bridge also owes its name to Megyer. Bus lines use the Megyeri Bridge. These lines connect north Pest with Békásmegyer. Békásmegyer is in the 3rd District.

Megyer is more than just a name. It is a place with a past. It is a part of Budapest’s story. It connects to other areas. It is a reminder of Hungary’s history.
