Picture the Place du Cabot a quiet square nestled in Marseille’s 9th arrondissement. It’s a place steeped in history. A place where the whispers of the past mingle with the gentle hum of modern life.

This unassuming square holds a fascinating secret. Its very name Cabot hints at a connection to a famous explorer. Jean Cabot a mariner born perhaps in Marseille. He left at seventeen for Venice and England. There he sought the westward route to the Indies a dream shared with Columbus.

Before the square existed a humble tavern stood here. Locals called it lou cabot meaning ‘hut’ in Provençal. This referred to the dry-stone huts used in nearby Vaufrèges for lime kilns. These kilns were vital to Marseille’s economy for centuries. Their output provided lime for construction and other uses. The tavern’s name then became the name of the square itself.

The Place du Cabot’s history stretches back further. To the pre-Roman era when a Ségobriges settlement stood on the hill above. Even in the 15th century the land belonged to Jean Cabot’s family. The square and its surroundings grew. A modest hamlet arose in the first half of the 19th century. Farmers and dairymen thrived there. The arrival of the canal de Marseille fostered growth. It allowed for irrigation and expanded agricultural production.

The arrival of the tramway in 1902 brought significant change. It transformed the area. By 1936 three châteaux forty-four villas and five farms dotted the landscape. The population swelled over the years. From 950 in 1876 to over 10,000 by the 2012 census.

Today the Place du Cabot is a peaceful spot. It offers a glimpse into Marseille’s layered past. The square stands as a testament to the region’s rich history. It links humble beginnings to a world-renowned explorer. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of those who shaped this vibrant city. It’s more than just a square. It’s a story waiting to be discovered.
