“Can you feel the hum?” I asked, gesturing towards the DTU Kraftvarmevӕrk. “That’s the sound of power, of innovation.” The DTU Kraftvarmevӕrk, nestled within the grounds of the Technical University of Denmark, is more than just a power plant. It’s a testament to Denmark’s commitment to efficient energy. Originally commissioned in 1998 by SK Energi and NESA, this combined cycle plant represents a remarkable feat of engineering. DTU Kraftvarmevӕrk generates a substantial 38 MW of electricity and an impressive 32 MJ/sec of district heating. That’s enough electricity for approximately 40,000 households and enough heat to warm 9,000 homes. The plant’s combined cycle system, with its gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, and steam turbine, maximizes energy efficiency, extracting up to 90% of the energy from its natural gas fuel source. The heat that would normally be lost in a traditional power plant is captured and repurposed to heat homes and businesses. Ownership of the DTU Kraftvarmevӕrk has changed hands over the years, reflecting the evolving energy landscape. In 2012, DONG Energy sold the plant to dcGeneration, a subsidiary of Danske Commodities A/S. More recently, in 2020, Vestforbrændingen took over operations, integrating the plant into their broader energy network. This move solidified their commitment to sustainable energy solutions and enhanced their ability to distribute excess heat from their waste-to-energy plant in Glostrup. The plant is equipped with a massive 8000 m3 heat accumulator tank. This thermal storage acts as a buffer, allowing excess heat to be stored and used later when demand is high. This system not only ensures a consistent supply of heat but also allows the plant to operate at peak efficiency. DTU Kraftvarmevӕrk is a vital part of Denmark’s energy infrastructure, a model of combined heat and power generation that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding community.
