What’s in a name? In Speckenbüttel, quite a bit. We’re standing in this charming Bremerhaven district, whose name tells a story of its own. “Specken” refers to the old causeways of brushwood and sod, while “büttel,” from the Low German “bodil,” means estate. Speckenbüttel: a place of pathways and landholdings. This area has seen centuries of change, from humble beginnings to a thriving part of Bremerhaven. Around the 15th century, the simple walkways of nearby Ganderse, accessible only by corduroy roads, were abandoned. The community shifted, evolving and adapting. Speckenbüttel’s story took a turn towards recreation in 1835 when the Lehe Schützenfeste, or marksmen’s festivals, began to be held in the Speckenbütteler Holz, the local woods. This tradition solidified with the construction of the Schützenhof, a shooting club building, in the park in 1854. The Schützenverein, established in 1848, further shaped the area, planting trees and bushes, creating paths, and installing benches, transforming the woods into a welcoming space. Speckenbüttel’s growth continued with the extension of the Lehe horse-drawn tramway in 1896, later electrified in 1908. This provided a direct link to the heart of Lehe, making Speckenbüttel more accessible than ever. The tram ran through Parkstrasse until its retirement in 1982, replaced by the bus lines we see today. Speckenbüttel isn’t just about leisure and festivities. A piece of history stands preserved here: the heritage-listed Pulvermagazin Speckenbüttel, a gunpowder magazine built in 1874-75. This building offers a glimpse into Speckenbüttel’s role in a bygone era. Over the decades, Speckenbüttel became a desirable residential area, particularly for the upper middle class in the 20th century. The population grew significantly, from 2,472 in 1950 to 3,503 in 1974. Speckenbüttel continued to develop as a hub for sports and recreation. In 1923, the Allgemeine Turn- und Sport-Bund (ATSB) opened its sports facilities on the grounds of the former cycle track. Later, in 1951, the Leher Turnerschaft (LTS) completed its own sports complex. A public swimming pool, the Freibad Speckenbüttel, was added in 1959, although it sadly closed after a fire in 2002. The Speckenbütteler Holz, once a simple wooded area, was formally designed into Speckenbütteler Park starting in 1890. In 1908, a significant addition enriched the park: a folklife open-air museum dedicated to the rural culture of the region. Today, this museum offers a fascinating look into the area’s agricultural past. As you stroll through Speckenbüttel today, you’ll find it to be a vibrant blend of history, recreation, and residential life, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the sounds of the present.
