Curious about locomotives? The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig offers a fascinating glimpse into railway history. This museum is not just about trains. It’s about the people who built them and the stories they carry.

The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig started in 1989. Some railway workers founded it. These workers were mainly from the Bahnbetriebswerk Leipzig-Engelsdorf. They wanted to preserve railway traditions. The group was initially called “IG Traditionslok Bayerischer Bahnhof zu Leipzig”.

In 1995, the group moved to Lokschuppen I. This was part of the former Bahnbetriebswerkes Leipzig-Plagwitz. Today, it is the Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig’s main location. It houses the EMBB e.V. office. There are also workshops and exhibition spaces. The exhibition showcases the club’s railway history collection.

One of the most interesting parts is the train collection. Most of the trains belong to the museum. Private collectors also display their trains and items here. The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig features several notable locomotives. These include the Dampflok 52 5448. It is on display at Leipzig Central Station on track 24. The museum also has the Dampflok 52 8098. Both are not in working condition. The Diesellok 8154-852 is operational. Other trains include a V 10 and a V 15.

The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig also has passenger cars. These include Bghw and AB cars. There is also a Salon-Kommandanten-Wagen. It once belonged to the National People’s Army. A Mitropa dining car is another highlight. You can also see a first-class express train car.

Reinhard Wieling is the chairman of the Eisenbahnmuseum “Bayerischer Bahnhof zu Leipzig” e.V. He and his colleagues lead tours. They share their knowledge with visitors.

The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig hosts special events. The Leipziger Eisenbahntage take place twice a year. These events feature changing exhibits. You can see different types of railway vehicles. The museum also offers “Dampfseminare”. Here, you can even take a test to become an honorary engine driver.

The Eisenbahnmuseum Leipzig is more than just a collection of trains. It is a place where history comes alive. The dedicated team keeps the spirit of railway history alive.
