Beneath the Texas sun stands the Mount Calvary Cemetery Plaque. Its weathered surface whispers tales of Dallas’s past. This unassuming marker holds the key to understanding a significant chapter in the city’s history.

The Mount Calvary Cemetery Plaque commemorates a burial ground used since the 1840s. Pioneer settlers laid their loved ones to rest here long before Dallas truly blossomed. The oldest known grave belongs to Amanda L. Houx. She passed away in 1847 a young woman whose life was cut short.

In 1868 William Huffhines generously donated two acres to Mount Calvary Baptist Church. This land encompassed those early graves. A simple frame church stood on this hallowed ground. But the congregation later moved to Richardson. It eventually became the First Baptist Church of Richardson.

The cemetery’s boundaries expanded over time. C C Huffhines added more land in 1896. C B Chick contributed more in 1925 and 1935. A cemetery association was formed in 1924. They diligently care for the almost 800 graves. These graves reflect the lives of those who helped build early Dallas.

The Mount Calvary Cemetery Plaque isn’t just a marker. It’s a poignant reminder of simpler times. It speaks of community faith and perseverance. The plaque tells a story that stretches from the early days of settlement through decades of growth and change. It’s a vital piece of Dallas’s legacy. It silently stands as a testament to the lives lived and the memories cherished within these sacred grounds. The plaque itself is modest. Yet its message is enduring. It compels us to reflect on the past and the enduring spirit of those buried within Mount Calvary Cemetery.
