Doesn’t the name Main Ridge paint a picture? It is a geographic description of the landform. We’re standing in Main Ridge, a rural gem nestled on the Mornington Peninsula. It is about 65 km south of Melbourne’s heart.

Main Ridge began as a farming area. Timber cutting paved the way for settlement. Look around you. You will see paddocks bordered by shelter belts of cypresses. Some original vegetation survives in uncleared gullies.

Did you know that Main Ridge had a school as early as 1871? It closed in 1951 when Red Hill Consolidated opened. This area has changed over time. The population in 1933 was 218. By 2021, it had grown to 453 residents.

Notice the rolling hills and farmland that surround us. Main Ridge’s elevation results in higher rainfall. Streams like Splitters Creek flow southward. The western edge features basaltic slopes. They meet timbered dunes. This land is less fertile. It is mainly used for grazing.

In 1974, Greens Bush was established. It is now part of Mornington Peninsula State Park. Greens Bush has the largest remnant vegetation area on the peninsula. It is also home to a large population of eastern grey kangaroos.

But Main Ridge is more than just farms and bushland today. It has become a tourist destination. Vineyards dot the landscape. You can find orchards where you can pick your own fruit. Galleries showcase local art.

Main Ridge Estate stands out. It is the Mornington Peninsula’s first licensed winery. This family-owned winery was established in 1975. They craft premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. You can enjoy wine tastings here. The Larder offers lunch. Sundowner drinks and snacks are available too.

Red Hill and Main Ridge are serious food and wine country. You will discover vineyards, breweries, and distilleries. Olive groves and orchards flourish here. Roadside signs point to farm gates. You can pick your own cherries, strawberries, and apples.

Since the 1970s, wineries have thrived in Main Ridge. The microclimates here are perfect for cool climate grapes. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay excel here. Boutique cellar doors offer unique experiences.

The Red Hill Market occurs monthly from September to May. It showcases the region’s fresh produce and gourmet treats. You can also find art, craft, clothing, and plants. Main Ridge offers scenic hills, wineries and local markets. It combines natural beauty with culinary delights.
