Once called Peng Kang, Jurong West was named after gambier plantations. These plantations thrived along Sungei Jurong. By the mid-20th century, brickworks, palm oil plantations and nurseries dotted the landscape. Public housing estates were limited to Boon Lay and Taman Jurong then.

The HDB conceptualized a new town in Jurong West in 1984. This marked a turning point. Jurong West was divided into nine subzones. The plan was to house 94000 public and private housing units.

The first apartment blocks were completed in Taman Jurong in 1963. By 2004, over 71000 dwelling units were ready. As of 2018, there were over 74000 HDB units in Jurong West.

Jurong West is located west of Tengah New Town. It is part of Singapore’s West Region. The Urban Redevelopment Authority defines this region.

The town is bordered by major expressways and a river. The Pan Island Expressway lies to the north. Sungei Jurong and Jurong Lake are to the east. The Ayer Rajah Expressway is to the south. Benoi Road and Upper Jurong Road are to the west. Jurong West Town Centre is centrally located.

In 2024, Yunnan is the most populous subzone with 66560 residents. Jurong West Central follows closely with 61900 residents. Chin Bee, Kian Teck and Safti are unpopulated. Jurong West has a high population density. About 26000 people live per square kilometer.

Most residents live in HDB flats. This is higher than the national average. Five-room and Executive HDB flats are the most common dwelling type.

Jurong West has a diverse ethnic mix. The Chinese population is a majority. However, it is lower than the national proportion.

Buddhism is the most common religion. Islam is the second most practiced religion. Many residents also identify with no religion.

The literacy rate is high. Most residents are literate in two languages. English and Chinese are the most common language pair. A significant portion of residents have a university qualification.

Most employed residents earn between S$3000 and S$3999 per month. The employment rate is higher than the national average.

Sungei Jurong and Sungei Lanchar run through Jurong West. These rivers have green connectors along their banks. They link housing to parks like Jurong Central Park. These connectors also reach the Jurong West Sports Centre. They extend to the Chinese Garden in Jurong East.

Jurong West’s public transport is well-planned. The East West MRT line serves the town. Boon Lay MRT station is a key interchange. Lakeside and Pioneer MRT stations also serve Jurong West. The Jurong Region Line will enhance connectivity in the future.

Boon Lay Bus Interchange is integrated with the MRT station. It provides easy transfers between transport modes.

Jurong West is connected by major expressways. The Pan Island Expressway and Ayer Rajah Expressway are crucial links.

Jurong Point Shopping Centre is a major retail hub. It is one of Singapore’s largest suburban shopping centers. The Centris condominium is located above Jurong Point.

The Jurong West Community Building houses a public library. It also includes The Frontier Community Club and Jurong Medical Centre.

Jurong West has many schools. There are primary schools, secondary schools and international schools.

Jurong Fire Station is notable. It is the first in Singapore with a slide. Pioneer Polyclinic provides healthcare services to the community.

Jurong West Sports Centre is the largest in Singapore. It offers a sheltered pool managed by Sport Singapore.
