A whisper of bird song. That’s how Veinte de Junio greets you. This quiet town 35 kilometers from Buenos Aires feels a world away.

Veinte de Junio a name that echoes Argentina’s history. It’s named for June 20th Argentina’s National Flag Day. But its story is far more intricate than a simple date.

Imagine this sleepy rural town in the 1940s. It wasn’t always Veinte de Junio. It began as a small settlement around a railway station. Estacion Pontevedra it was then called. Built in the early 1900s by a French company. This railway station was the heart of early Veinte de Junio.

Then came the changes. In 1947 the land was developed. Parque Ibáñez-Estacion Pontevedra a more vibrant name. But the name didn’t last. In 1949 the political maps were redrawn. The borders of Merlo and La Matanza shifted. Veinte de Junio found its place in La Matanza. Its identity solidified.

The railway thrived for decades. But sadly the good times didn’t last. Privatization hit Argentina’s rail system hard in the 1990s. Estacion 20 de Junio closed its doors on March 13 1993. The tracks fell silent.

Today the station stands frozen in time. A poignant reminder of what was. Yet it’s not entirely forgotten. Bikers follow the old tracks. They find solace in the quiet landscape. They pause at Estacion 20 de Junio a testament to the town’s resilience.

Veinte de Junio is a place of contrasts. Isolation yes but also safety. Lack of development perhaps but also a strong sense of community. The residents work together. They dream of reopening the train line. They are fighting to reconnect their town to the wider world.

As you stand here you sense the tranquility. The scent of wild flowers in the spring. The distant rumble of tractors. The Arroyo de la Cañada Pantanosa a narrow creek flowing through farms. This is Veinte de Junio. A town with a quiet strength a story waiting to be rediscovered. A town rich in history and hope.
