This street pays homage to a pioneering figure in psychiatry, Jean-Étienne Dominique Esquirol. Esquirol was a student of Philippe Pinel, another prominent name in the field. He dedicated his life to improving the lives of the mentally ill, advocating for their humane treatment during a time when they were often misunderstood and mistreated. Esquirol’s contributions went beyond just advocating for better treatment. He was a keen observer of mental illness and made significant strides in its clinical description and statistical analysis. He was the first to differentiate between mental retardation and insanity, a crucial distinction that helped shape the field.
