Onion Creek Baptist Church

Established in 1857, Onion Creek Baptist Church has a rich history. It has served the community for generations. The church wasn’t always at its current location on Riverside Drive. It has moved several times throughout its history. Originally called Onion Creek Missionary Baptist Church, it was founded on land owned by the Allen and Stedman families. The first services were held in a simple building near Burleson Road in Southeast Austin. Over the years, the congregation worshipped at various locations, including the Devotion School, the Cloud School, and a site near Bergstrom Air Force Base. The church even held revivals along Onion Creek, baptizing new members in its flowing waters. Onion Creek Baptist Church played a vital role in the lives of the people in Southeast Austin, Montopolis, Moore’s Crossing, and Del Valle. It became a cornerstone of the community. Its attendance rates were remarkably high, even earning recognition for its 100% attendance record in the early 20th century. The church faced challenges, particularly during World War II. When the government acquired land for Bergstrom Air Force Base, the church’s location was dangerously close to the runways. After legal battles, the church was able to secure a new location and moved to its current site on East Riverside Drive in 1961. Even though the name officially changed to Onion Creek Baptist Church around 1955, the church proudly celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1957. This was at a location near the airbase, before settling at its current address. Today, Onion Creek Baptist Church stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. It continues to serve the community, offering spiritual guidance and fellowship. The original church building was moved and now serves another congregation. The land where the church once stood near the airbase is now vacant, a quiet reminder of its vibrant past.
