Pesterwitz – Altfranken

Wasn’t Pesterwitz once a bustling center of wine production? Look around you. This very spot is steeped in history. Pesterwitz a charming village now part of Freital boasts a rich past. Its story is intertwined with winemaking and coal mining. For centuries locals cultivated vineyards on these slopes. The Jochhöhschlösschen a beautiful little wine chateau stands as a testament to this era. This elegant structure built in 1794 by Günter Carl Albrecht von Nimptsch once represented the pinnacle of Saxon wine estates. Sadly the phylloxera plague devastated vineyards around 1900. However the Pesterwitzer Jochhöhschlösschen vineyard label still lives on. The legacy of winemaking endures thanks to the Gut Pesterwitz estate. They continue to produce wine on these hillsides. But Pesterwitz wasn’t just about wine. Coal mining played a significant role in its economy. Initially small-scale mining operations existed in Niederpesterwitz and northeast of the Burgwartsberg. Later larger operations such as the Claus’sche and Freiherrlich von Burgker Steinkohlenwerke extracted coal. Mining continued after World War II to supply fuel. Today however Pesterwitz thrives as a residential area. The former Rittergut has been renovated. It now offers apartments and businesses. New housing developments like the Beamtenviertel have expanded the community. The area is attractive because of its picturesque setting and proximity to both Dresden and Freital. Every year on the third weekend of September Pesterwitz celebrates its harvest festival. This festival is a wonderful reflection of the community spirit and rich history of the region. You can enjoy a glass of local wine as you soak in the atmosphere. It is truly a place to remember.
