In 1934, Padre Ângelo Di Paoli received a mission. Saint Luis Orione tasked him with building this sanctuary. The first step was a simple act. On May 3, 1935, he created a book. This book would record all donations for the sacred construction of Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

The land for Nossa Senhora de Fátima was acquired in 1938. It was located in the center of Rio then the Brazilian capital. Construction began swiftly. By 1939, the first chapel was erected. On October 13, 1939, Padre Ângelo Di Paoli celebrated the first Mass there. This marked a significant milestone. On December 10, 1939, a blessing occurred. Dom Beni Aloísio Mazela, the Apostolic Nuncio, blessed the image of Nossa Senhora de Fátima. This image remains there today.

The Confraria de Nossa Senhora de Fátima was founded in January 1940. A cornerstone was placed in June 1940. Cardinal Dom Sebastião Leme led the liturgical solemnity. The Portuguese Ambassador, Dr. Martinho Nobre de Melo, attended. Many figures from the Portuguese community were present. The construction of Nossa Senhora de Fátima became a community endeavor.

On September 9, 1960, the sanctuary achieved a new status. It became Igreja Matriz. Thus, it was named Santuário Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Fátima do Centro do Rio de Janeiro.

Nossa Senhora de Fátima is more than just a building. It embodies a message. The original apparitions occurred in Fátima, Portugal, in 1917. Three shepherd children witnessed these events. The Virgin Mary appeared to them multiple times. She urged them to pray. She called for conversion and penance. The message emphasized the importance of the Rosary. The story of the shepherd children is central to the devotion.

The sanctuary in Portugal features a chapel. It marks the exact spot of the apparitions. In 1946, the image of Nossa Senhora de Fátima was crowned. This event was led by Cardinal Masella. He was a pontifical legate.

The main church in Fátima received the title of Minor Basilica in 1954. Pope Pius XII bestowed this honor. Over the years, the site expanded. Buildings and religious monuments were added. It is now known as the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima. Millions of pilgrims visit each year. It is known as “O Altar do Mundo”. It is one of the largest Marian sanctuaries globally.
