Gazing upon Waddon Ponds, can you hear the whispers of the River Wandle? Waddon Ponds, a tranquil oasis of 8.5 acres, stands as one of the few places in Croydon where this hidden river reveals itself. This urban park, bordered by Mill Lane and cradled by Waddon Court Road, Court Drive, and The Ridgeway, offers a glimpse into Croydon’s past. The history of Waddon Ponds stretches back centuries. The ponds were once part of a sprawling 2,000-acre estate, encompassing Waddon Court Farm and Waddon Lodge. The Domesday Book itself mentions a mill at the northern edge of the ponds, diligently grinding corn. Imagine the scene: the river, dammed to create a lake, reflecting the sky above. Later, in the late 19th century, the river was diverted, the newly drained land repurposed for watercress beds, then allotments, and finally, light industry. The mill, a silent witness to the changing times, finally closed its doors in 1928. The land where Waddon Ponds now rests was once part of two estates: Waddon Court, owned by Mr. Crowley, and Waddon Lodge, belonging to Miss Mary Waterall. Upon their deaths, Croydon Corporation acquired portions of both estates in 1928, thanks to the tireless campaigning of Mr. Pescott Row, a champion of natural beauty. A sundial, gifted by author H.M. Tomlinson, commemorates Row’s dedication. Waddon Ponds is more than just a park. It’s a testament to the enduring power of nature, a sanctuary where the whispers of the past mingle with the laughter of children playing in the playground, a place where the River Wandle, once hidden, flows freely once more.
