A bronze goddess amidst a modern landscape. That’s Sapientia. Here she stands as a powerful symbol. She watches over Aarhus Universitetshospital.
Sapientia is more than just a sculpture. She is an idea brought to life. Bjørn Nørgaard created her. He is a renowned artist. The sculpture was unveiled in October 2022.
But her story began long before that day. Nørgaard’s journey with this concept started in 1985. He was in Berlin. A DAAD stipendiat supported his work there. He became fascinated by the German word “Fähigkeit”. It translates to abilities. But it holds a depth not easily captured in Danish. He also pondered “Vermummte”. This word means masked. Its use is ambiguous.
These linguistic musings led to two sculptures in 1987. One was feminine. He named it Göttin der vielen Fähigkeiten. This means Goddess of Many Abilities. The other was masculine. He named it Vermummte Gestalt. This means Masked Figure.
Nørgaard first modeled them as single forms. They were cast in plaster. Then, he created a series of works in various materials. The original plaster models now reside at Aarhus Universitetshospital.
Years later Ib Hessov contacted Nørgaard’s gallerist. Hessov was an artist and former surgeon. He asked if Nørgaard would create a large version of Göttin der vielen Fähigkeiten. It was meant for the hospital’s exterior.
Nørgaard considered repeating a sculpture after 35 years. It was created in a different context. Then, Sophia appeared. Sophia is the wisdom of God in female form. She existed before creation. This seemed fitting for the modern hospital setting. Here, they strive to defy death. Since medical language is mostly Latin, Sophia became Sapientia.
Nørgaard felt these modern hospital pyramids lacked something. Life was reduced to mechanics here. It became mere matter. Sapientia could bring divine wisdom in female form.
So, he modeled her. Now, Sapientia stands as a patron. She stands in front of Aarhus Universitetshospital. Nørgaard hopes she brings a sense of the divine to this place. He offers wisdom to those who seek healing. She is a reminder of the human spirit.
Take a moment to appreciate Sapientia’s presence. Consider her journey from an idea. She transformed into a powerful symbol of wisdom. She is a testament to art’s ability to transform spaces. She enriches our understanding of the world.
