Born in the small town of Millican, Texas, in 1883, Tueria Dell Marshall’s life journey led him to become a cornerstone of Dallas’s African-American community. Here at the Tueria Dell Marshall Plaque, we celebrate a man known as the “father of higher education” for this very community. His story began with tragedy, losing his mother at the tender age of three. Young Tueria then moved to Dallas with his grandmother. He attended Dallas public schools, laying the foundation for his own future in education. He went on to earn a B.A. from Wiley College, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. from Prairie View A&M University. Tueria Dell Marshall dedicated almost fifty years of his life to the Dallas Independent School District. He served as both teacher and principal at various schools, including Pacific Avenue, Wheatley, B. F. Darrell, Booker T. Washington, and finally, Lincoln High School. Tueria Dell Marshall wasn’t just an educator; he was a community builder. In 1927, he established the Wiley Extension School. He also introduced evening classes for adults at B. F. Darrell School. The Tueria Dell Marshall Plaque commemorates a man who championed education. He even secured a basic trainer plane to teach aviation mechanics at Lincoln High School. He served as chairman of the education committee of the Moorland YMCA and also led the Negro Division of the March of Dimes. Marshall’s dedication to education received recognition in May 1948. An evaluating committee of Texas educators honored him at a dinner celebrating Lincoln High School’s high rating. The committee noted the high quality of instruction and praised Marshall’s superior leadership. Tueria Dell Marshall passed away in 1960, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. In 2009, he was posthumously inducted into the African-American Educators Hall of Fame. The Tueria Dell Marshall Plaque stands as a tribute to his unwavering dedication and lasting impact on Dallas.
