The statue is a reproduction. The original marble masterpiece was created by Odoardo Tabacchi after 1877. Tabacchi a skilled sculptor was a student at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. He later worked in various Italian cities mastering monumental sculptures and delicate female figures.

Tabacchi presented his marble La Plongeuse at the 1877 Esposizione artistica di Napoli. King Vittorio Emanuele II acquired it. The King then sent it to the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. It was displayed in the Italian section of the Galerie des Beaux-Arts a significant honor. Today the original resides in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples.

Numerous bronze reproductions exist. This one you see before you is a testament to the sculpture’s enduring appeal. The bronze’s subtle silvering enhances the sense of movement and grace. Note the signature on the base O Tabacchi Torino. It hints at the sculptor’s later years in Turin where he taught at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti.
