“Transcendence” isn’t just a sculpture. It is a symbol of San Francisco’s financial heart. This massive black granite artwork outside 555 California Street has a story.

Originally named “Transcendence,” it was crafted by Masayuki Nagare. He used 200 tons of black Swedish granite. The sculpture was commissioned in 1969. It was intended for the A.P. Giannini Plaza. This plaza was the headquarters of Bank of America. It was the center of San Francisco finance.

Herb Caen a San Francisco Chronicle columnist gave it a new identity. He humorously dubbed it the “Banker’s Heart.” The name captured the sculpture’s essence. It stuck with the city. Even though Bank of America moved its headquarters its heart remained in San Francisco.

Look closely at the glistening black monolith. Notice its smooth sinewy form. Imagine the bustling financial activity that once surrounded it. Think of the deals made and fortunes won nearby.

“Transcendence” or the “Banker’s Heart” represents more than finance. It embodies San Francisco’s resilience and adaptability. It shows how art reflects a city’s spirit. The sculpture stands as a reminder of the city’s financial past. It is a testament to San Francisco’s enduring character. It is a heart made of stone. It still beats with the rhythm of the city.

Consider this. The next time you pass by this sculpture remember its dual identity. Think of the artist’s vision. Recall the columnist’s wit. Feel the pulse of San Francisco’s “Banker’s Heart”.
