Gazing at the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche, imagine the clatter of gin bottles. Yes, gin bottles. After World War II, this grand church, the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche, stood damaged, its windows shattered. A nearby distillery offered a unique solution: thousands of empty gin bottles. These weren’t destined for the recycling bin. They became shimmering, makeshift stained glass, earning the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche the nickname “Gin Church”. The Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche, nestled in the heart of Schöneberg, has a history as vibrant as its unusual windows. Its story begins in the mid-19th century. In 1862, the need for a new church became clear. The area between the Landwehrkanal and the village of Schöneberg was growing rapidly. By 1864, Wilhelm I officially named it the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche, after the twelve apostles of Christ. Architect Friedrich August Stüler designed the initial plans. However, Hermann Blankenstein and Julius Emmerich completed the church in 1874. The towering 57-meter spire became a beacon in the community. The church, constructed in the Rundbogenstil (Round-arch style), showcases striking brick architecture. The reddish hues of the brick contrast beautifully with the Berlin skyline. Inside, the light streams through the high, round-arched windows, each adorned with an oculus. The interior also features stunning stained glass windows by Alfred Kothe, added between 1960 and 1992. They depict the twelve apostles and scenes from the Christmas story. By 1880, the congregation had outgrown the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche. This led to the establishment of the Lutherkirche on Dennewitzplatz as an offshoot parish in 1894. The Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche has weathered many storms. It witnessed the donation of its bronze bells during World War I. It also served as a site of resistance through the Confessing Church movement during the Nazi era. Today, the Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vital community hub. It’s home to social initiatives like the Mittwochs-Initiative. This organization supports those affected by AIDS and engages in harm reduction efforts for drug users. The church also hosts a variety of cultural and musical events, including performances by the acclaimed Zwölf-Apostel-Chor. This choir has even recorded Handel’s Messiah. The Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche stands as a testament to resilience, creativity, and community spirit. It embodies the heart of Berlin.
