Could these walls whisper tales of faith and community? Today we stand before the Zwölf Apostel Kirche. It is more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of Langenhagen’s Catholic community. This church has a unique story. It reflects the changing face of this region.
After World War II, Langenhagen saw an influx of Catholic refugees. The existing Liebfrauen church became insufficient. A new place of worship was needed. Thus, the idea for Zwölf Apostel Kirche was born. The parish recognized the need. They decided to create a dedicated space in the southern part of Langenhagen.
In 1970, the Liebfrauen parish established a subsidiary parish. This was in the southern part of Langenhagen. This division paved the way for the construction of the Zwölf Apostel Kirche. Architects Ernst-Otto Rossbach and Hans-Hermann Priesemann designed the church. Construction took place in 1972 and 1973. The foundation stone was laid on April 12, 1972. Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen consecrated it on June 29, 1973.
The church’s design focuses on the altar. Interlocking rectangular elements define the bright interior. Bands of exposed concrete add a modern touch. Large stained-glass windows fill the space with colorful light. These windows create a contemplative atmosphere. They invite reflection.
In 1991, a simple open bell tower was added. It holds three bells. These bells call the faithful to prayer. The sounds resonate throughout the community. In 1999, Liebfrauen and Zwölf Apostel formed a pastoral unity. Then on November 1, 2006, they merged. They became the Liebfrauen parish we know today.
The Zwölf Apostel Kirche also has a kindergarten nearby. It was built in 1975. Before that, the community center housed the kindergarten. Today, the kindergarten cares for about 75 children. They range in age from three to six.
This church stands as a testament to faith. It also shows community growth. The Zwölf Apostel Kirche adapted to the needs of its parishioners. It continues to be a vital part of Langenhagen. It is a welcoming space for all. The church’s history reflects the resilience of the Catholic community. It also shows their commitment to serving others.
