Is this a place of beauty or a stark reminder? Right here stands the Zwangsarbeiter-Mahnmal. It is a place of reflection on a dark chapter in Dortmund’s history. Today we remember the forced laborers.

This memorial stands near the Phoenix-See. It marks a site intrinsically linked to forced labor. The contrast between today’s beauty and the past horror is intentional. It keeps memories alive.

World War II left Dortmund in ruins. Ninety-five percent of the city center was destroyed. Dortmund was dedicated to National Socialism. It suffered the largest conventional air raid in Europe in March 1945.

Over 80000 Zwangsarbeiter toiled in Dortmund. Many were crammed into Stalag VI D at the Westfalenhallen. Conditions were brutal. They faced starvation and arbitrary cruelty.

More than a quarter of these laborers worked for the Horder Bergwerks- und Hutten-Verein. This was an external camp of Buchenwald concentration camp. Production sites Phoenix-Ost and -West stood where the Phoenix-See is now.

The Zwangsarbeiter-Mahnmal’s creation wasn’t easy. The Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes initiated it. Even the city council faced opposition. Some questioned the need for such a memorial.

The location is significant for several reasons. The Phoenix-See is a popular spot. Exposing visitors to this history is crucial. The nearby police station also offers protection. It deters vandalism by Neo-Nazis.

These forced laborers were exploited across Dortmund. The steel industry in Horde fueled the war. It produced weapons for Nazi aggression. This was financed by Ruhr capital. It resulted in crimes against humanity.

They built what is thought to be Europe’s largest civilian deep bunker under Dortmund. This hidden labyrinth stretches for 4.3 kilometers. Constant danger lurked in the darkness.

After the war Dortmund was rebuilt over these forgotten tunnels. During Allied attacks these workers had to leave the deep construction sites. They made room for the self-proclaimed master race. They were left exposed to bombs.

The Zwangsarbeiter-Mahnmal gives something back to those without names or faces. It remembers them. There were around 300 forced and prisoner-of-war camps in Dortmund. In May 1943 over 30000 foreign workers were interned. Their fates remain largely unknown.

Germany neglected the historical processing of forced labor for too long. Witnesses weren’t questioned. Much knowledge was lost. The Zwangsarbeiter-Mahnmal helps make sure such atrocities never happen again. It honors the victims. It promotes a future of diversity and tolerance. May it also remind us to stand against fascism and war forever.
