Zussman Playground

Amidst the vibrant energy of Detroit, Zussman Park stands as a testament to community spirit and resilience. Zussman Park, once slated for closure, has been revitalized into a hub for recreation and connection. In 2013, a young boy’s determination saved Zussman Park from closure. 10-year-old Joshua Smith rallied the community, raising funds through lemonade and popcorn sales. His efforts caught the attention of Playworld, who donated new playground equipment, now proudly standing near a vibrant mural. Today’s Zussman Park is a far cry from its former state. Thanks to the Strategic Neighborhood Fund, Zussman Park has undergone an $850,000 transformation. The park boasts a walking loop, a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness zone, picnic shelters with grills, a basketball court, and new trees and public art. A striking mural by artist Mario Moore adorns the park, depicting Detroit’s rich history and celebrating iconic figures like Diana Ross and Dinah Washington. Zussman Park reflects the community’s desires, shaped through meetings and collaborations. Residents envisioned a place for active play and community gathering, resulting in the park’s diverse amenities. Zussman Park isn’t just a park; it’s a symbol of the Russell Woods neighborhood’s resilience and a vibrant gathering place for Detroit residents.
