“A million visitors at home and abroad,” a testament to its allure. This is Foshan Zumiao. It stands before you now. Foshan Zumiao is more than just a temple. It is a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, and art.
This temple is a Daoist temple dedicated to Beidi. Beidi is the Northern God. Locals believe he controls the waters of Guangdong. Foshan Ancestral Temple consists of several important sections. These include the Ancestral Temple itself, the Confucius Temple, Huang Feihong Memorial Hall, and Ip Man Hall.
Let’s step back in time. The story of Foshan Zumiao began in the Song Dynasty. Emperor Zhezong ruled during the Yuanfeng Era 1078-1085. The temple, unfortunately, met its demise towards the end of the Yuan Dynasty. But from the ashes, it rose again in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty.
After 1949, a new chapter began. The temple transformed into the Foshan Municipal Museum. The Guangdong provincial government recognized its importance. It was listed as a main cultural relic under preservation.
The Ancestral Temple is the heart of the complex. It worships Xuan Wu. Xuan Wu is also known as the Northern Emperor, a Taoist deity. This ancient building dates back to the 11th century. Today, it stands as a key cultural relic. The State Council protects it. It opened to the public in 1956.
The Confucius Temple adds another layer to Zumiao’s cultural significance. Constructed in 1911, it honors Confucius. He was an eminent ancient Chinese educator. Since 1981, visitors have come to admire this historic site. The Foshan Municipal Government protects it.
The Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and Ip Man Hall are more recent additions. They were founded in the 21st century. These halls commemorate martial art masters. Both Huang Feihong and Ip Man were born in Foshan.
Foshan Ancestral Temple’s culture is rich and diverse. It encompasses Taoism, martial arts, and folk art. Throughout the year, the temple hosts various folk culture activities. Spring Blessing Ceremony and Temple Fair are popular. Community Drinking Rituals and Mid-Autumn Festival draw crowds. You might witness a Preschool Children Enlightening Ceremony. Lion Dance, Cantonese Opera, and Foshan Martial Art Performances happen regularly.
Cantonese opera once flourished here. The temple runs martial-arts classes for children every summer.
Before the establishment of a local administrative organization in the Qing Dynasty, it was a place for discussing official businesses. This was different from general temples.
The temple has a floor area of 3, 500 square meters, consisting of the Wanfu Platform, the Lingying Memorial Archway, the Jinxiang Pool, the Bell-Drum Tower, the Front Hall, the Main Temple, and the Qingzhen Tower.
Today, you can experience the vibrant atmosphere of Foshan Zumiao. Martial Arts and Lion Dance performances occur daily. They take place in front of Huang Feihong Memorial Hall.
