“Step back in time with me for a moment.” Zouma was once known as Zouma Township. Let’s uncover some of its hidden stories.

Zouma is a town with its own unique history. It is located within the broader tapestry of Guilin. Guilin itself boasts a history stretching back thousands of years. The earliest inhabitants were the Zengpiyan people. They formed a matriarchal society around 10,000 years ago.

Guilin later saw the influence of the Baiyue people. They settled near the Li River around 314 BCE. These settlers shaped Guilin’s cultural identity. They blended their customs with the natural world.

Over the centuries Guilin has had different names. Before 1940 it was known as Guilin Jun and Guilin Fu. The name Guilin means “forest of sweet osmanthus”. This name highlights the city’s deep connection to nature. Osmanthus trees have always been part of the landscape.

Guilin became important due to its strategic location. During the Qin dynasty it was an administrative center. Its fertile valleys supported agriculture and trade. Buddhism also flourished here. The karst peaks and rice terraces provided inspiration. Guilin became a melting pot of culture religion and economy.

Before the Han Chinese arrived Guangxi was home to ethnic minorities. These groups included the Zhuang and Yao. The Zhuang adapted more easily to Han culture. The Yao resisted. This led to unrest in central and eastern Guangxi.

Tensions between ethnic groups and the Han Chinese continued. During the Song dynasty policies alternated between coercion and concession. A Zhuang leader even formed an independent kingdom briefly. Conflicts persisted through the Yuan and Ming dynasties.

The Taiping Rebellion had roots in Guangxi. Hong Xiuquan a failed exam candidate led the rebellion. He believed himself to be Jesus’s younger brother. In the 1840s Hong and Feng Yunshan converted people to Christianity. They formed the God-worshipping Society in Guangxi.

In 1850 Qing troops threatened members of the Society. This led to a revolt. In 1851 Hong declared the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The Taipings laid siege to Guilin in 1852. The 40000-strong force was defeated by General Jiang Zhongyuan.

Guilin lost its status as Guangxi’s capital to Nanning in the early 1900s. However Guilin remained politically important. It was a base for the Nationalist Party under Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek. The Guangxi Clique governed the region with autonomy.

In the late 1920s members of the Zhuang minority joined the Communist movement. In 1940 the city was officially named Guilin.

During World War II Guilin was a base for Chinese and Allied air forces. The Flying Tigers were stationed here. In 1944 Japanese forces captured Guilin briefly. Chinese troops soon retook the city.

Communist forces took Guilin in 1949. Guangxi became part of the People’s Republic of China. In 1958 Guangxi became an autonomous region.

Guilin’s population has always been diverse. The Zhuang are the largest ethnic group in Guangxi. Other groups include the Yao Dong Miao Hui Yi and Gin.

In 1981 Guilin was designated a culturally and historically protected city. Its karst landscape became a UNESCO site in 2014.

Today Guilin and nearby Zouma welcome visitors from around the world. Guilin is known for its beautiful scenery and unique culture. Its population is approximately 1154700.

Guilin’s history is long and complex. From ancient settlements to modern tourism it has played a significant role in China. Zouma as part of Guilin shares in this rich heritage. It offers a glimpse into a region shaped by nature culture and conflict.
