Picture a tranquil lake nestled in the heart of Johannesburg. This is Zoo Lake a haven of serenity and history. Originally part of the Braamfontein farm it was transformed. Banker and mining magnate Hermann Eckstein bought the land. He envisioned a mineral mine. His plans failed. Instead he created a magnificent timber plantation. He named it Sachsenwald after Otto von Bismarck’s estate. Millions of trees were planted. The forest became a beloved retreat for the wealthy.

Years later Eckstein’s business partners gifted over 200 acres to the Johannesburg Town Council. This generous donation included land for the Johannesburg Zoo and Hermann Eckstein Park. Zoo Lake became the park’s centerpiece. A man-made lake added in 1908. The generous donation had a remarkable condition. The facilities had to be open to all races. This was unusual in colonial South Africa. The park’s multi-racial nature persisted even during apartheid.

In 1937 a magnificent addition graced Zoo Lake. The Coronation Fountain a musical fountain was built. It commemorated the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. This fountain is a Johannesburg heritage symbol. Zoo Lake’s fame spread. In 1956 Margot Fonteyn danced Swan Lake with the lake as her breathtaking backdrop.

Today Zoo Lake is a vibrant hub. People stroll along its banks. They picnic on its lush lawns. Families feed the ducks. Boats glide across the water. The lake hosts many events. Jazz on the Lake fills the air with music. Carols by Candlelight create a magical atmosphere. Artists display their creations at the Artists under the Sun exhibition. The lake’s history continues. Its future is as bright as its past. It remains a place where people of all backgrounds can gather and enjoy its beauty. A true Johannesburg treasure.
