Have you ever seen a giant panda up close and personal? You can at Zoo Atlanta, home to a variety of animals, but most notably giant pandas. This famous zoo is home to a pair of pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, who came to Atlanta as juveniles in 1999. They have been a beloved pair to many visitors, producing several offspring over the years! The zoo is internationally recognized for its scientific research, including behavioral research on the giant pandas, contributing greatly to our knowledge of these remarkable animals. While the pandas were a major attraction at Zoo Atlanta for over 20 years, they ultimately returned to China in 2024. While you may not catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures at Zoo Atlanta, you can enjoy the sights of other intriguing animals like giraffes, lions, and even gorillas! One of the zoo’s most popular habitats is the African Savanna, an exhibit that accurately replicates the continent’s most famous landscape. This awe-inspiring habitat is also home to a male Southern white rhinoceros named Mumbles. While you’re there make sure to visit the Scaly Slimy Spectacular, the world’s first LEED Gold-certified amphibian and reptile complex. You will be in awe of the exotic animals like softshell turtles, African slender-snouted crocodiles, and a huge variety of lizards, snakes, and frogs in the complex’s large tanks. So much to see, so little time!
