Can you imagine a place where the clatter of horse hooves once echoed, now replaced by the hum of film studios? This is Zone 10 Kodambakkam, also known as K-Town or Kollywood, the heart of the Tamil film industry. Zone 10 Kodambakkam isn’t just a neighborhood. It’s a story waiting to be told, a story woven with threads of history, mythology, and cinematic magic. Zone 10 Kodambakkam’s history stretches back over two millennia. Long before film studios and stars, this area was part of the ancient temple town of Vadapalani during the Pallava and Later Chola dynasties. The Vengeeswarar Temple and Bharadvajeswarar Temple stand as testaments to this rich past. The name “Kodambakkam” has a few possible origins. One suggests it comes from the Urdu “Ghoda Bagh,” meaning “garden of horses,” a nod to its past as a source for the Nawab’s horses. Another theory links it to “Karkodagan Pakkam,” referencing a snake from Hindu mythology that worshipped Lord Shiva in this very place. The modern Zone 10 Kodambakkam emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries. It blossomed into a hub for the Tamil film industry in the mid-20th century with the establishment of A.V.M. Studios, the first movie studio in the area, in 1948. Zone 10 Kodambakkam became synonymous with Kollywood, churning out countless films and launching the careers of numerous stars. The area’s streets are lined with film studios, including the iconic Prasad Labs and Vijaya Vauhini studios. Zone 10 Kodambakkam also played a significant role in historical events. In 1938, it hosted a conference protesting the imposition of Hindi in the Madras Presidency. The neighborhood’s infrastructure also boasts one of Chennai’s first flyovers, built in 1967. This flyover connects Zone 10 Kodambakkam with neighboring areas like K. K. Nagar, Vadapalani, and Ashok Nagar. Today, Zone 10 Kodambakkam remains the heart of Tamil cinema. The homes of film stars, directors, and producers dot the landscape. The area continues to evolve, blending its rich history with its modern identity as the vibrant center of Kollywood. Zone 10 Kodambakkam is more than just a place; it’s an experience. It’s the energy of a film set, the echo of ancient temples, and the whisper of history in every street corner.
