“Did you ever hear of a highway that doubles as a scenic overlook?” I began, my voice echoing slightly in the tranquil air of Barranco La Madera. “Well, here in La Gomera, they’ve turned that idea into reality.” We stood at the entrance to Zona Recreativa Barranco La Madera, a newly opened recreational area nestled alongside the GM-1 highway. This isn’t just any rest stop. It’s part of a larger initiative to transform La Gomera’s roads into open-air viewing platforms, enhancing the island’s natural beauty. The Zona Recreativa Barranco La Madera is the first of its kind along the GM-1, a vital route connecting the capital with the northern towns. Its creation follows the success of similar projects on the GM-2 and GM-3 highways, proving the island’s commitment to enhancing its tourism offerings. This area, once just a roadside patch, has been revitalized thanks to a joint effort between the Island Council and the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Tourism. They invested over 167,000 euros in transforming this space into a haven for both locals and tourists. The Zona Recreativa Barranco La Madera is divided into three distinct areas. The leisure zone boasts eight pergolas, each equipped with a table, perfect for a picnic lunch while enjoying the breathtaking views. Additional urban furniture and a wooden platform with benches provide ample space to relax and soak in the atmosphere. For the more active visitor, the recreation area includes a specially designed children’s zone with inclusive play equipment for kids up to 12 years old. A rustic wooden swing, a seesaw, and a hexagonal tower add to the fun. And for those seeking a moment of tranquility, landscaped gardens showcase local flora, seamlessly blending the recreational area with the surrounding natural environment. The Zona Recreativa Barranco La Madera isn’t just a rest stop. It’s a testament to La Gomera’s commitment to sustainable tourism, a place where visitors can connect with the island’s natural beauty while enjoying modern amenities.
