That’s because the architectural design of Zoharei Hama, with its large sundial, two clocks, and gnomon, resembles a face. It is often referred to as the “smiling clock”. This whimsical feature is just one of the many fascinating aspects of Zoharei Hama, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue. Rabbi Shmuel Levy, an American immigrant, envisioned a beacon of hope for newcomers. He built Zoharei Hama between 1908 and 1917. Its purpose was to provide shelter and a place of worship. Initially, the building also housed the Tiferet Zion V’yerushalayim Hostel, accommodating up to 50 guests. Over time, the synagogue became the sole tenant, its presence enduring. Today, Zoharei Hama still holds prayer services. It welcomes people from all walks of life, from local businessmen to curious tourists. The sundial, a masterpiece designed by Rabbi Moshe Shapiro, is more than just a charming detail. It played a crucial role in the lives of Orthodox Jews. They used it to determine the precise times for morning prayers, afternoon prayers, and the lighting of Shabbat candles. Before its construction, people had to rely on observation points like the Mount of Olives.
