Under the vibrant blue and yellow circus tent of Zirkus Mond a unique energy hums. Zirkus Mond isn’t just a circus it’s a Berlin institution. Founded in 2018 by Max Mohr a seasoned circus director Zirkus Mond quickly became a hub for Berlin’s artistic community. Located on a reclaimed plot near the S-Bahn tracks in Prenzlauer Berg Zirkus Mond shares its space with other creative collectives. The Wild Waste Gallery and the Kopfueber collective are just a few of its neighbours.
Zirkus Mond’s shows are unlike any other. Each weekend features a different production. Sometimes it’s Kinder des Mondes Varieté hosted by Max Mohr himself. Other times it’s Mond Cabaret curated by the artistic director Juan Migama. The performers are international. Their acts range from acrobatics to clowning to juggling. There are no animals. The shows are designed for adults but children often find their way into the audience.
One particularly memorable production was a satire on conspiracy theories called Conspiracies. It gained immense popularity during the pandemic. Initially streamed online it reached 1000 viewers on an obscure YouTube channel. This online success highlighted the adaptability of Zirkus Mond. It showed how even during lockdowns the circus could connect with its audience.
The creation of Zirkus Mond wasn’t without its challenges. Preparing the site involved the herculean task of moving 50 tons of sand and installing a recycled aluminum floor. The dedication of the team is evident. Even the director Marlen Voigt who also happens to be a doctor dedicates her time to this alternative cultural space.
Zirkus Mond provides a platform for both seasoned professionals and aspiring artists. From experienced performers like Anaelle Molinario who has worked with Cirque Plume to beginners like the magician Timon Timon Zirkus Mond fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment. The shows are vibrant. They combine elements of classic variety with modern circus performance. The atmosphere is electric. After the shows the lines blur. Performers and audience mingle share a drink and dance creating a true sense of community.
Zirkus Mond is more than just entertainment. It’s a testament to the power of creative collaboration. It is a reflection of Berlin’s diverse and vibrant arts scene. It is a place where everyone feels welcome. It is a place where dreams take flight. So step inside Zirkus Mond and let the magic begin.
