Imagine a wall of water contained by more than just concrete. Welcome to Zipingpu Dam. Zipingpu Dam is an embankment dam on the Min River. It stands near Dujiangyan in Sichuan Province. Construction of this massive structure began in 2001. It concluded in late 2006. But the story of this site goes back much further.

The area around Zipingpu Dam has a rich history. It was initially developed nearly 2000 years ago during the Shu-Han era. The traditional Dujiangyan Irrigation System has been in use since 256 BC. This system includes canals, levees, and dams.

Zipingpu Dam itself is an impressive feat of engineering. The Zipingpu dam reaches 156 meters in height. Its length extends 663 meters. The dam impounds the Min River. This creates the Zipingpu Reservoir. The reservoir has a total capacity of 1.12 billion cubic meters.

The Zipingpu dam also serves as a power station. It houses four generators. These generators have a total capacity of 760 MW. The project is mainly for flood control. The dam further aids water supply and power generation. The Zipingpu project is owned by Sichuan Zipingpu Development Co., Ltd.

However, the Zipingpu Dam’s story isn’t without controversy. On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the region. The Zipingpu dam sustained damage. Cracks and fissures appeared in its wall. The reservoir had to be gradually drained. This allowed for consolidation works.

The reservoir sits only a few kilometers from the earthquake epicenter. It is also just a few hundred meters from the fault. Some geologists believe that the changing water levels in the reservoir acted as a trigger for the earthquake. This hypothesis remains unproven.

Despite the damage, the Zipingpu dam withstood the earthquake. It became the first CFRD higher than 100 meters. It experienced a Magnitude-8 earthquake and maintained safety. This assured the confidence of more than 10 million people living downstream. It guaranteed the water and electricity supply during the post-disaster period.

Following the earthquake, emergency measures were taken. Idling units were opened to provide emergency water. The bottom outlets and sediment flushing holes were repaired. They began to release water 28 hours after the quake. This decreased the reservoir’s water level to ensure the dam’s safety. The power station was repaired. It restarted generation in 5 days. It supplied electricity to the earthquake disastrous areas.

A rescue transportation route was formed on the Zipingpu reservoir. This route played a vital role. It allowed for timely shipping of rescue teams and materials. It also helped evacuate people from the earthquake-stricken areas.

The survival of Zipingpu Dam shows correct organization in design, construction, and maintenance. The lessons from this project offer an excellent reference. They are invaluable for dam engineers in seismic areas.

So, as you stand here, consider the story of Zipingpu. It is a tale of engineering, resilience, and the complex relationship between humans and nature.
