The towering brick facade of Zion Temple – Church of God in Christ stands before you, a beacon of faith in the heart of Houston. This church, founded in 1933, holds a special place in the history of the Freedmen’s Town district. It started as a humble storefront, lovingly dubbed “The Little Church on Ruthven Street.”

Bishop Hayward W. Falls, a man of vision and dedication, built this first structure with donated materials, fulfilling the spiritual needs of the community. In 1941, the church expanded and was renamed New Zion Temple Church of God in Christ. The current majestic edifice was erected in 1946, a testament to the congregation’s unwavering faith.

This wasn’t just a place of worship; it was a center of social, economic, and cultural life for the community. Zion Temple became a pillar of strength, assisting other churches to flourish across Texas, California, Louisiana, Ohio, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and England.

Today, the congregation continues its tradition of generosity by running a food pantry and clothes closet, providing annual holiday donations, and supporting a prison ministry. Zion Temple remains a powerful symbol of resilience, proving that even in the face of adversity, faith can build a community.
