Remember the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Yorkville. That’s the original name etched above the entrance of Zion Saint Mark’s Church. This church stands as a testament to faith and community. It is located at 339-341 East 84th Street.

Zion Saint Mark’s Church has a rich history. It starts with German immigrants in New York City. The neo-Gothic structure was built in 1888. Michael J. Fitz Mahoney was the architect. It was initially the German Evangelical Church of Yorkville.

In 1892, it became Zion Lutheran Church. This happened when that congregation was founded. The German-speaking community grew quickly. Mass immigration from Germany fueled this growth. It happened in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1946, Zion merged with St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

St. Mark’s was originally on the Lower East Side. German immigrants founded it in 1846. They wanted a place for their faith. Disaster struck St. Mark’s in 1904. The Ladies’ Aid Society chartered the General Slocum for an outing. The boat caught fire near Hell’s Gate. Over 1000 parishioners died. Many Germans left Kleindeutschland after the tragedy. They moved to Yorkville.

St. Mark’s persevered but eventually moved north. It brought its altar to Zion Saint Mark’s Church. Yorkville thrived but lost its German character. Today, it is a diverse neighborhood. Zion-St. Mark’s membership declined. This happened with the end of mass immigration. However, the church still holds German services. It celebrates German cultural events. The congregation now includes people from many nations.

Zion Saint Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church gained recognition. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 23, 1995.

The church boasts a historic organ. Hilborne L. Roosevelt built the first organ in 1886. The Fenton Organ Company electrified it in 1912. Later, James A. Konzelman Pipe Organs rebuilt the organ.

Today, Zion Saint Mark’s Church stands as a landmark. It symbolizes faith and community. It also embodies the immigrant experience in New York City. Its history echoes through its walls. It resonates in every service and cultural event.
