“Building A Church People Can Believe In”. That’s not just a motto it is the guiding principle here at Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Let me tell you about Zion Hill Baptist Church in Houston. It is a testament to faith community and perseverance. The church’s story began in 1930. A group of determined individuals sought to unite Houston’s Fifth Ward. They desired a place of worship. Reverend Jerome Harris led them.
Initially they chose the name Macedonia. Only one deacon, A Smith, was appointed. The building was at Buck and Cage Street. The congregation grew and needed more space. They acquired additional accommodations.
Reverend W T Perry succeeded Reverend Harris in 1932. They bought the property at Buck and Cage from Mr and Mrs W C Munn. They erected a small building to glorify God. The church’s name changed to Zion Hill Baptist Church.
In 1949, Reverend B J Perry passed away. Reverend Curverson Lee Punch became the leader in 1950. He brought strength to the congregation.
The City of Houston’s expansion led to a move in May 1955. The Highway Department purchased the property. Zion Hill Baptist Church relocated to the Kashmere Gardens area. It is now located at the corner of Crane and Leffingwell.
The church experienced spiritual numerical and financial growth. In 1957 the mortgage was paid off. The building was enlarged in 1959 creating a more Christ like atmosphere.
In 1967 the building was enlarged. This added beauty and spirit filled services. Renovations continued over the years. The Sanctuary was renovated in 1980. In 1987 offices classrooms and restrooms were added. The fellowship hall was renovated in 1996. It then included a library classrooms and a nursery.
Reverend Lewis Terry Jr became pastor in 1993. This was due to Reverend C L Punch’s illness. Reverend Punch became Pastor Emeritus. After Reverend Punch died in 1995 Reverend Terry resigned in 1996. In 1997 Reverend Stan K Lewis Sr was selected to lead.
In May 1999 a memorial plaque honored Rev Dr C L Punch. In March 2000 Reverend Mark Anthony Edwards was selected as pastor. After 17 years Reverend Edwards departed in August 2017.
In February 2018 Zion Hill MBC received a restoration grant. The Samaritan’s Purse Foundation provided it. The grant allowed for a complete restoration. This included a new roof foundation flooring HVAC overhaul and Fellowship Hall refurbishment. The church completed its restoration in January 2020.
Zion Hill Baptist Church continues its mission. It offers salvation and restoration. It serves God’s people in and around Houston.
