A beacon of faith in Harlem, the Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church has witnessed a remarkable journey. It stands proudly on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, between 127th Street. The Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. The church’s story began in the early 1950s. A small group of believers gathered in a Harlem beauty salon, dreaming of a place to worship. Their dream materialized in August 1954, when Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church first opened its doors. Tragedy struck in August 2000. A devastating fire engulfed their previous location on Manhattan Avenue and 116th Street. Undeterred, the congregation, led by Pastor Frank Blackshear, rallied together. They found a new home at 2365 Frederick Douglass Boulevard, their current location. Among the congregation was a young man named Christopher Lance Williams. He would later become a pivotal figure in the church’s history. Williams honed his musical talents. He became the director of music for several churches in the New York Tri-State area. He also lectured and directed gospel music at Iona College. Beyond the church, Williams served his community as a New York City police officer. He earned certifications in mental health first aid, substance abuse prevention, mentoring program development, and child abuse identification and reporting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Williams ensured the church remained connected. He implemented virtual worship services and Bible study online. He and his wife, Amaranta Williams, founded Ministry That Matters. Through this outreach, they provided personal protective equipment, food, and COVID response plans to the community. In 2021, a historic moment occurred. Williams, the grandson of Pastor Frank Blackshear, was elected as the pastor-elect of Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church. He was officially installed as senior pastor in May 2022. Today, Dr. Chris Williams leads the congregation. The Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church continues to be a vibrant center of faith, fellowship, and community service in Harlem. Its story is one of resilience, faith, and the enduring power of community.
