Imagine those first meetings in 1931. Reverend Arthur James Spence and a small group gathered at his Fitzwater Street home. This was the humble beginning of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

The Missionary Bible Class transformed into a church. They elected Reverend Spence as pastor. Deacons Moses Butler, Willie Nesbitt, and H. C. Campbell took on essential roles.

Zion Hill Baptist Church took its name from Reverend Spence’s home church in Virginia. The church first met at 2201 Montrose Street. It grew quickly adding sixty members in its first year.

After two years, Zion Hill moved to 2231 Carpenter Street. The new location was above a garage. The church rented the first-floor stable for $3.50 per month. In 1937, Zion Hill secured its charter for $250.

The church renovated the Carpenter Street building. By June 1938, Zion Hill purchased the properties for $5,300. From 1944 to 1955, the church expanded. It bought homes at 2229 and 2233 Carpenter Street plus a parsonage at 918 South 24th Street.

In 1955, Zion Hill made a significant move. It purchased the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church at 3925 Walnut Street for $90,000. The first service at the new location was held in March 1956. By 1965, the congregation had paid off the mortgage through faith and hard work.

In 1969, Zion Hill acquired its current location. The underutilized Presbyterian Church at 53rd and Spruce Streets was purchased for $275,000 in cash. This marked a new chapter for the growing church.

Reverend Arthur James Spence served as pastor for forty years until his death in 1971. He dedicated his life to the church and its members.

Reverend Grander Lee Smith became the second pastor in 1973. During his six-year tenure, the church grew and added air conditioning and a mini bus.

In 1979, a major fire damaged the building. Restoration began in 1981. Services were temporarily held at the Parkside Community YMCA and Mrs. Ouida Burton’s Day Care. By November 1981, the restored church was rededicated.

Reverend William B. Shorter became the third pastor in 1982. After two years, Reverend Larry L. Marcus took over in 1984. He served for ten years adding many new members and starting the men and women fellowships. He also developed a tutorial program.

In 1997, Reverend Melvin McAllister became the fifth pastor. He introduced several new ministries. These included the Flower Guild, Hospitality Ministry, and Youth Fellowship.

Reverend Reginald C. Johnson became the sixth pastor in 1999. He initiated the Tuesday Noon Day Service and oversaw major renovations.

In 2013, Reverend Quincy C. Hobbs, Jr. became the seventh pastor. He revitalized ministries and established new ones. These include the Youth Praise Dance Ministry and the Men’s Ministry. Zion Hill Baptist Church continues to thrive. It serves its members and the wider Philadelphia community. Its history reflects faith, resilience, and growth.
