Bab el Nabi Daud. That’s what the Arabs call the Zion Gate. This translates to Gate of the Prophet David.

Zion Gate stands as one of the seven historic gates of Jerusalem’s Old City. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent ordered its construction in 1540. These walls surround the 1km Old City.

Notice the “L” shape of the Zion Gate. You enter. Then you make a 90-degree turn under the stone archway. Finally, you exit. This design increased security.

Imagine guards pouring boiling oil from the balcony above. See that small window? Guards aimed arrows at attackers from there.

Mount Zion sits directly outside the city walls. The Zion Gate owes its name to this mountain. It is also called Bab Hart el Yahud. This means Gate of the Jews. It leads directly to the Jewish Quarter.

The Zion Gate bears scars from the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. Jewish forces fought to take the Jewish Quarter. Hundreds of bullets left pockmarks. Look closely at the stone wall around the gate. You can still see them. Therefore it is also called the Wounded Gate.

The Jewish fighters succeeded. However, they could not hold their gain. They retreated. Jordan occupied the Old City from 1948 to 1967. The Zion Gate remained closed during Jordanian rule.

Restoration work took place in 2008. It marked the Zion Gate’s 468th birthday. But some damage remains. Remnants of shelling from 1948 and 1967 endure.

The Zion Gate is more than just an entrance. It’s a testament to Jerusalem’s turbulent past. It connects us to stories of war. It links us to the enduring spirit of this city.
