Behold Zion Church a magnificent structure standing proudly on Bushy Park Road. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith community and a fascinating piece of Dublin’s history.
Zion Church opened its doors on All Saints’ Day November 1 1861. It was consecrated the following year in 1862. This grand opening and consecration were made possible thanks to a generous bequest from John Gold a prominent stockbroker. His legacy lives on in the very stones of this beautiful building.
The church wasn’t built in a day. The funds were carefully managed by trustees. They appointed a management committee and chapel wardens. The first select vestry was elected in 1871 but the committee continued its work until 1877. A pastoral district was assigned to Zion Church in 1885. This marked an important step in its establishment as a vital part of the community.
Zion Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s the heart of a thriving community. It boasts a lively primary school with five teachers. The church and its school serve approximately 250 households. This active community uses a well-equipped hall next to the church for various parish activities throughout the week.
The church’s architecture is a marvel. The design is cruciform with Mediaeval Gothic style. The limestone construction features Caen stone dressings and decorative elements. The interior originally accommodated about 850 people. It has an impressive open timber roof and stained deal fittings. The tower with its pyramidal tiled roof is a striking feature.
Over the years Zion Church has seen many changes and upgrades. Electric lighting replaced gas in 1914. A new parochial hall was built in 1961. This was a centenary project replacing the school which previously hosted parish activities. Modern toilet facilities were even installed as recently as 2016. The church continues to adapt to the needs of its community.
The main weekly service at Zion Church is held at 1030 am on Sunday mornings. The Eucharist is celebrated twice a month. A prayer service known as Morning Prayer is held on other Sundays. There is also a monthly Family Eucharist which focuses on families and young people.
Zion Church is part of the Church of Ireland diocese of Dublin. The Church of Ireland is an autonomous church within the worldwide Anglican Communion. It’s a part of the historic Christian Church in Ireland that was influenced by the 16th century Reformation.
