From humble beginnings to a place of spiritual renewal Zion Hill Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Founded in 1930 in Houston’s Fifth Ward this church initially operated under the name Macedonia. Reverend Jerome Harris led the small congregation housed in a modest building on Buck and Cage Streets. Deacon A Smith served as the sole deacon.
The church faced numerous challenges. Limited space hampered growth. Reverend Harris’s failing health led to Reverend W T Perry taking over in 1932. The congregation purchased additional space to accommodate its growing numbers. This pivotal moment marked a name change from Macedonia to Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Tragedy struck in 1949 with the passing of Reverend B J Perry. Reverend Curverson Lee Punch stepped in to guide the grieving congregation. Expansion by the City of Houston forced a relocation in 1955. Zion Hill found a new home in the Kashmere Gardens area on Crane and Leffingwell Streets. This marked another chapter in the church’s evolution.
Despite the upheaval the church thrived. In 1957 the mortgage was paid off a significant achievement. Further expansion followed in 1959 improving the worship space. Zion Hill continued to grow both spiritually and physically. Throughout the years the church building underwent multiple renovations and expansions. These additions included offices classrooms restrooms and a renovated fellowship hall. These improvements significantly enhanced the worship experience.
The church’s history also includes several changes in leadership. Reverend Lewis Terry Jr served as pastor for a period following Reverend Punch’s illness. Reverend Stan K Lewis Sr led the flock for a short time before Reverend Mark Anthony Edwards took the reins in 2000. After 17 years of service Reverend Edwards departed in 2017. Despite this change Zion Hill continued to minister to its community. A remarkable restoration in 2020 thanks to a Samaritan’s Purse grant fully revitalized the building. Today Zion Hill Baptist Church continues its ministry in Houston offering spiritual guidance and support to its community. Its story is a powerful reminder of faith’s enduring strength and resilience.
